Emily Scullion (Founder and Co-Director)
BArch Hons MArch PGDip ARB
Originally from Ireland, Emily moved to the Northeast to study architecture at Northumbria University, where she graduated with distinction. She then earned her ARB accreditation after completing the RIBA Part III course at Newcastle University. Prior to founding Emily Scullion Architects, she was an integral part of a Northeast-based, RIBA award-winning practice, specialising in residential design.
After the birth of her first child, Emily decided to establish her own practice, driven by a desire to create a supportive environment for herself and others in the industry. As a female in the industry, she is committed to being a role model and advocate for women in architecture and beyond.
Emily maintains an active role in architectural education at INTO Newcastle University where she leads an Architectural Design module for International Year One students, as well as contributing to teaching across various studios at the Schools of Architecture at both Newcastle and Northumbria University. Her passion for teaching stems from a desire to make a positive and meaningful impact on the next generation of designers.
Emily’s enthusiasm for good quality design is supported by her membership in DesigneLtd as a industry expert where she is involved with design review panels across the Northeast of England. Working alongside other industry professionals to offer constructive, impartial and expert advice to local authorities, clients, developers and design teams with the aim of improving the overall quality of design in the built environment. Through this role, she has also had major impact on producing design codes for large scale master planning in the region.
On a personal level, Emily is an advocate for better mental health and is open about her experiences with mental health struggles over the years. She has a resolute feminism and desire for equality. She enjoys building meaningful relationships with people and maintains an active lifestyle, playing netball, going to the gym, and sea swimming. She also loves sharing her passion for gut health!
